The tulip is a heart poured in stages: two or three white layers stacked on top of each other, each one nudging the previous layer forward.
It has no wiggle, so it is often easier than the rosetta once your heart is consistent. The hard part is keeping the layers separate instead of watching them merge into one blob.
1. Set up a smaller base than usual
Swirl the pitcher until the milk is glossy. Tilt the cup, start high, and build an even base.
Every layer needs room. A three-layer tulip needs roughly three hearts’ worth of white space, so keep the base lean or you will run out of cup on the second layer.
2. Pour the first layer like a small heart
Drop the spout close, increase the flow, and push a white circle near the centre of the cup — but stop while it is still small.
This first layer is the base of the stack. It does not need to be pretty; it needs to be a solid white landing pad.
3. Lift, move back, push again
This is the whole tulip: the push-and-lift.
- Ease the flow and lift the spout slightly to stop the first layer from growing.
- Move the pour point a centimetre or so back, towards the far side of the cup.
- Drop close again and push a second white circle into the first one.
The second push shoves the first layer forward and stretches it into a petal shape. Two pushes make a simple tulip; a third, smaller push behind the second makes the classic stacked version.
4. Cut through the whole stack
After the last layer, ease the flow, lift, and pull a thin stream through all the layers from back to front.
The cut-through pulls each layer to a point and gives the tulip its stem line. Keep it light — a heavy cut drags the bottom layer sideways and lopsides the whole stack.
Why the layers merge
Merging is the most common tulip problem, and it has two main causes:
- Not lifting between layers. If the flow never pauses, each “layer” is just the same circle still growing. Lift enough that the white stops spreading before you move back.
- Milk too thin or too hot. Fluid milk lays clean separate layers; thin milk lets each push dissolve into the one before. If every layer disappears into the last, revisit milk texture before blaming the pour.
A third cause is pushing in the same spot. If the pour point does not move backwards, the layers pile vertically instead of stacking.

A three-pour tulip session
- First pour: two layers only. Focus on a full lift between them.
- Second pour: add the third layer, smaller than the second.
- Third pour: keep the stack and clean up the cut-through.
